At Yamasaki Academy Woodbridge we offer high level instruction for all our programs with highly skilled instructors/coaches. An instructor is a person who teaches a subject or skill, a coach is a person who teaches and trains a competitor or team and provides guidance during competition. We consider ourselves not only instructors but, more importantly, coaches. We provide technical instruction, as well as guidance, in training and competition to help you achieve your goals. We know the how to provide the right level on motivation by understanding the weaknesses and strengths or our athletes, competitors, and members. We strive in giving our all to help you achieve your fitness and competitive goals.

Owner and Head BJJ coach Joe Cunningham

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 2nd degree Black Belt Head Coach Joe Cunningham. Coach Joe has been training Brazilian Ju-Jitsu under the Yamasakis since 1998 and has competed at various tournaments including NAGA, US Grappling and the IBJJF Pan Ams.


Assistant Muay Thai coach Ron King III

Ron “Black Diamond” King III’s started training Muay Thai when he was 11 years old. By the time he reached his 17th birthday he had already had 18 amateur fights and was one of the most decorated teenage fighters in the country. He has won the WKA North American Muay Thai Championship, represented the United States in the WKA World Championships and fought in Iowa for an invitational only tournament for TBA. All of this while still in High School! While attending West Springfield High School he also joined the wrestling team and competed in the Regionals his freshman year. We are extremely proud to have Ron with us at the Academy and expect great things from him in the future. Ron’s accomplishments include:

Head MMA and assistant BJJ coach Francisco Salguero

Head MMA Coach/Assistant BJJ Coach Francisco Salguero. Coach Cisco is a retired professional MMA fighter and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt who boxed in Golden Gloves as well as wrestled and coached wrestling teams.


Judo and assistant Academy Kids and Youth BJJ coach Kenton Givens

Head Judo Coach Kenton is a 2nd Dan Judo Black Belt and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt who is also the head coach for the Virginia Academy of Judo.


Grappling Fundamentals and Assistant BJJ coach David Tepper

Grappling Fundamentals Coach Dave is an amateur MMA fighter and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt who has competed in wrestling, Judo and various BJJ tournaments.


Youth and Adult BJJ Assistant Instructor Jeff O'Neill

Coach Jeff is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt who has competed in wrestling and various BJJ tournaments.


Assistant BJJ coach Scott Sperling

Coach Scott is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt who has competed at various BJJ and submission grappling tournaments.


Assistant Youth BJJ and Academy Kids coach Kristin Plichta

Coach Kristin is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt and International Youth Conditioning Association certified Youth Fitness Specialist.
